About Riina Õun

Riina Õun is the creative director, a multi-disciplinary designer and a materials researcher behind Riina O brand. She is a 2020 graduate of MA Material Futures at Central Saint Martins, specialising in bio-design.

Previously she trained in leather art and accessories design at Estonian Academy of Arts before moving to London to work for high-end designers, such as Una Burke, Giles Deacon, Meadham Kirchhoff, etc. Responding to the popular demand of couture leather gloves, Riina O label was launched in 2013.
In recent years the brand has expanded into sustainable materials research and development within the circular economy.
Riina O is aiming to explore how craft has to adapt to working with bio-materials, aiming to bring the materials out of the experimentation stage into the practical use in the industry.

Riina´s latest work "Crafting Organic Waste For Fashion" is exploring how waste Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY) generated from the kombucha drink industry can be re-processed into a new, more sustainable, vegan, leather-like material. The various possibilities of working with the new material are displayed within a collection of handbags and purses that each demonstrate a different technique for production - from traditional stitching to modular assembly and liquid moulding.
