&Tradition launches X, a lounge chair by Hvidt & Mølgaard, a Copenhagen-based architecture and design firm established in 1944. &Tradition’s London showroom will highlight the enduring legacy of the pioneering design duo with an exhibition of their classic pieces.
Following the success of the AX chair in 1950, Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were faced with the challenge of creating another furniture series that would wield equal impact. Nearly a decade later, they revealed X, a supremely stylish lounge chair, that solidified their reputation as masters in the world of Danish design. X, designed in 1958, reflects the unorthodox way in which Hvidt and Mølgaard approached principles of construction and design. While its distinctive sloping silhouette and understated aesthetic reflect the traditional values of Danish design, it was created as a self-assembly piece that could be easily shipped beyond the borders of their small country. As some of the earliest advocates for buildable furniture, Hvidt and Mølgaard paved the way for future generations of Scandinavian designers to access a global audience with the same innovative ideas. Renowned for their rigorous approach, Hvidt & Mølgaard were pioneers in the shift towards industrialised furniture production. After founding the firm in 1944, the duo combined their understanding of traditional craftsmanship techniques with the desire to form pieces that were easy to assemble and produce on a mass scale.
