ROCKET
Established by Jonathan Stephenson in London’s West End in 1994, Rocket Gallery grew out of his typography, printing and publishing company The Rocket Press, which was founded in 1981. In 2005 Rocket moved to a newly-converted gallery space in London’s creative East End. Over the last decade the gallery has forged an international reputation for its particular vision of minimal painting, sculpture, photography and design. The artists and designers who work with Rocket investigate the areas of crossover between art, architecture and design.
Design exhibitions in the last four years have included the first-ever show of 1950s Krenit bowls by the Danish designer Herbert Krenchel; a mini-retrospective of mid-century furniture by the Danish-born American designer Jens Risom; a dialogue show of vintage Poul Kjaerholm furniture with contemporary three-dimensional paintings by Meg Shirayama; and 'Merger', a show of minimal painting and furniture by young designers. Our 2009 LDF exhibition 'Book a table' combined specially commissioned coffee tables with minimal artists' books and was described by Wallpaper.com as '...an exercise in simplicity, a rational, unfussy design showcase and an expertly curated show.'
Our 2010 exhibition program included three major design shows. In Spring, 'Trio', art and design from three legends of mid-century Danish modernism: Herbert Krenchel, Hans Wegner and Ib Geertsen. In Summer, 'Jens Risom: furniture', the launch of the Rocket collection of mid-century classics, a collaboration with Benchmark Furniture (jensrisom.com). In Autumn, 'Tomoko Azumi: objective', the first ever gallery exhibition of work by the London-based Japanese product designer.
Our Autumn 2011 design exhibition is REVOLT / REFORM / RESULT: Post-war Domestic Dutch Furniture by Friso Kramer, Wim Rietveld, Martin Visser, Cees Braakman, Rudolf Wolf and others.
In September 2011 we launch the Rocket Shop (adjoining the main gallery space) where we will permanently sell mid-century and contemporary furniture, art and books.
