Where it all started:
The roots of Iittala date back to 1881 when a glass factory was established ina village of the same name in southern Finland. Their breakthrough came in the early years of Modernism an functionalism in the 1920s and 1930s. Today although Iittala is much more than glass, the thinking that became the basis of Scandinavian modernist design still drives the brand: Combine design insight with craftmanship to offer the world lasting design against throwawayism.
Quotes:
"Smash the dinner sets" Kaj Frank (said in opposition to gold decorated dinner sets).
"The end user decides the use" Aino and Alvar Aalto (They believed design should be humanising and refused to show how objects should be used, letting the user, freely interpret the origins and the function).
