Boffi Chelsea presents “Rainforest”
For London Design Festival 2009, Boffi Chelsea will host an installation by architect and designer Patrick Nadeau. The installation will transform the UK flagship showroom into a tropical landscape, where nature becomes a metaphor for Boffi’s design concept.
Since 1997, Patrick Nadeau has held a particular interest for research into the contemporary direction of gardens, and has developed several projects which cross the boundaries of architecture, design and nature winning numerous prizes and distinctions.
Water, the element at the heart of the ritual of bathing, is omnipresent. An important aspect of the design is the arrangement of Corian® hoops, over which thousands of epiphyte plants are laid to create a ‘vegetal’ rain fall. These skeletal domes expose a quality of Corian® that is rarely explored: its flexibility. The hoops are of different diameters and are laid out at variable heights then draped with tangles of Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides), a plant indigenous to the rain forests of South America. Lighting is an integral part of the installation, as zenithal lights shines through the organic sky and creates a play of light and shade which evokes the atmosphere of a tropical forest.
The minimal design of Boffi furniture harmonizes with the natural installation to reveal the singularity of the Boffi aesthetic. Like epiphyte plants which live by osmosis within their ecosystem, Boffi bathroom furniture completes without ever overwhelming the domestic landscape, highlighting the intelligence of conception and the excellence of design that is at the forefront of Boffi.
The plants use, self-sufficiently synthesize and reflect the DNA of the design of Boffi baths where the function is encapsulated in an autonomous and sculptural form. The design of the collections evokes a primitive beauty, whilst the sophisticated technology of the materials and the techniques lends a radical aesthetic.
