2008 | Installed on the river terrace of Somerset House, Portrait was created by designers Fredrikson Stallard. The Corten steel form imitated a plank of wood, the shape magnified and transformed using a combination of steel and light to recreate the familiar grain structure. In daylight the steel sections, representing the light wood grain laid down by the tree in summer, became the dominant feature. At nightfall the spaces in between, representing the dark wood grain laid down in winter, were illuminated in the installation sponsor Veuve Clicquot's signature yellow, as the steel became the negative space.
