Exhibition

Industrial design studio PearsonLloyd will present 1 to 1: Inside Design with PearsonLloyd, (13th – 23rd September), an exhibition at Great Western Studios exploring their recent work, design process and the ongoing themes that drive their thinking.

The forth in a new Inside Design series within Great Western Studios, exploring work from a range of leading designers, 1 to 1: Inside Design with PearsonLloyd will mark the first time the London studio has been commissioned to create an exhibition on their approach to industrial design.

Demonstrating how objects affect space and the way people inhabit it, an installation will be made up of 20 open-ended plywood boxes each measuring 3 metres. The plywood boxes are laid out and stacked one upon another, making and remaking the way the gallery is used, creating formal or informal spaces, enclosed or open spaces, sitting spaces, and abstract spaces.

A survey of the projects PearsonLloyd have been involved in over the years, with a focus on the ideas that interests them, and an explanation of the process that lies underneath their practice, will also be on show.

Founded in 1997, PearsonLloyd comprises of Tom Lloyd and Luke Pearson who have worked for 15 years with well-known international brands including Knoll, Steelcase, Alias, Tacchini and UK brand Modus. Furniture design lies at the heart of the studio’s practice.

With a belief that everyday products deserve a level of craftsmanship that is equal to the very best examples of the handmade and a recognition that contemporary life is above all a shared experience has emerged as a dominant theme in PearsonLloyd’s thinking and practice.

Through current projects in aviation with Lufthansa, urban design for the city of Bath, workplace research with furniture brand Bene and with the Department of Health, to tackle complex social issues in emergency medicine, the studio seeks to challenge existing models of how people live, travel, work and inhabit the city together.

The successful journey PearsonLloyd have embarked on in their career is testament to their commitment to the realities of mass production and their passion for the craft of industrial design.

Great Western Studios is dedicated to providing affordable workspace for the creative industries whilst creating a cultural hub in West
London. First opened in 1994, GWS has always been an inspirational work
environment, where individuals and small businesses can meet, network and
flourish.

With a cultural
programme including exhibitions, film screenings, and talks; plus catwalks,
pop-up dinners, quiz nights and other socials – GWS has gained a reputation for a year round fun, innovative programme of events.

For the London Design Festival, GWS in collaboration with The National Centre for Craft and Design, Lincolnshire, is hosting an exhibition of miniature bathing huts, 'Bathing Beauties: beach huts for the 21st century®.' From 13th - 26th September 2012, a selection of over 100 models (scale 1:15) will show the
incredible virtuosity of international designers and architects as they reimagine the simple beach hut. This amazing array of
design solutions will catapult our ideas of seaside micro-architecture into a
new aesthetic.

This is an exhibition for all the family to see design at its best and most innovative. Wonder at the way in which architecture and design can solve problems, make imaginative places, and provoke both thought and humour.
