Shaun Kardinal is an avid collector of vintage postcards which, by strategic geometric enhancements in the form of embroidery, he transforms from erstwhile tourist ephemera into wistful and exquisite treasures.
The artist started to use embroidery in 2009 having been working with photography. "I hated the amount of waste that went into photography" he says. "I enjoyed the simplicity of collage and over the years have developed a love of the craft, in addition to a love of reused materials. I also really appreciate the nostalgic feeling I get from the imagery on these found postcards, saturated with memories I've never had".
For his show in our Oxo Tower studio Shaun has made seventeen new pieces especially for our space that will be on sale during the London Design Festival. Given our love and obsession for souvenirs and heirlooms over at Snowden Flood it is unsurprising that we are huge fans of his work.
