Bespoke lighting specialist, Mediterraneo, presents a new series of striking suspension lights which will feature in their installation entitled Rivoluzione, at Bibendum, Chelsea (18th - 29th September 2010) to coincide with the London Design Festival 2010. This is the first time that a design exhibition has been held in the Michelin Building courtyard at Bibendum. The installation has been inspired by this remarkable building, the former headquarters of the Michelin Tyre Company, and celebrates our timeless fascination with the wheel; its shape, movement and purpose. The simple beauty of the tyre is reflected in the series of lights which are at once unexpected, versatile and functional, highlighting Mediterraneo's unique way of creating contemporary lighting using traditional craftsmanship and contrasting materials.
Giovanni Corrado, Creative Director, Mediterraneo, describes the pieces which emerged during the process as "revolutionising what a Murano glass light can be: combining the unique individuality and irregularity of handmade glass with the industrial qualities of materials such as silicone. Our wish was to create a vivid link to the iconic history of the Michelin Building through these new suspension lights."
SATURNO is a single suspended ring comprised of cristallo trihedrons, bound by a black polished nickel frame, and fixed with a lattimo glass disc at its core. Inspired by the Constructivist's use of geometric shapes, Saturno makes bold statements from every angle. The sparkle of the trihedron elements contrasted against the dark frame and satin steel fittings, highlights how well Murano glass works in contemporary design.
RAUL's subtle red flash of overbraid suspension cable and sleek polished chrome fittings offer a fresh take on a traditional composition. The elegant design of the cristallo arms and ornate silvered fondino contrast with the sculptural framework, which is at once hidden and revealed, then finished with an oversized silver crowned bulb as the finial. This unusual, harmonious arrangement produces the effect of light shining on, as well as through, the glass and is a captivating alternative to the chandelier's customary form.
IXION (available in two sizes: small and large) demonstrates true versatility in its design, whether suspended individually or displayed in multiple number. Its striking effect is achieved through the materials used: a combination of Murano glass and translucent silicone rubber. To achieve its circular shape, the cristallo ring demands great control from the maestro during production. The rubber is then carefully arranged in order to suspend the solid weight of the glass which hovers effortlessly reminiscent of a wheel and its spokes. Ixion is entirely handmade, with intrinsic irregularities enhancing its appeal.
Rivoluzione is exhibited at Bibendum, Michelin Building Courtyard, 81 Fulham Road, London, SW3 6RD, from 18th to 29th September 2010 (12pm - 10.30pm, Mon to Sat; 12pm - 10pm, Sun).
