Block Party, a new Crafts Council Touring Exhibition curated by visual artist Lucy Orta, launches during the London Design Festival from 22 to 25 September at designjunction. The exhibition explores the alchemy of the centuries-old skill of tailoring by presenting work by 15 UK and international artists who push pattern-cutting beyond the fashion garment. Artists include Yinka Shonibare MBE, Shelley Fox, Charlotte Hodes, Dai Rees and Hormazd Narilewalla.
The process of transforming the flat pattern block into three dimensional form is an enduring source of inspiration. Looking beyond the garment, Block Party showcases work by artists that have embraced the interdisciplinary nature of this skill, applying the aesthetics and techniques of pattern cutting to their practice in innovative and unexpected ways.
