t e n d e r p r o d u c t . is delighted to present, in conjunction with the London Design Festival:
Cold Comfort
a window exhibition by artist SALLY SPINKS
13. 09. 2011 08. 10. 2011
CURATED BY STELLA SIDELI
Spinks' artwork is predominantly textile-based and concentrates on the changing nature of class, commercialism and specifically where these intersect within the domestic environment. For this exhibition the particular leitmotif is comfort/discomfort. Spinks sharply defines this through the juxtaposition of a comforting knit textile vs. the industrious nature of heating and cooling ducts. The main character is 'Construct': an installation made from PVC heat ducting. The giant white knitting piece will cover tenderproduct's entire window. Cold Comfort spreads throughout the shop, including work on both floors. Imposing upon the space, Spinks' presence becomes invasive covering areas from floor to ceiling. However, as visitors peer through gaps of large knitted links, 'Construct' will continue to reveal additional elements; much like a magnifying glass traveling over a warm cozy jumper. Catching a glimpse of common objects in both an altered functionality and scale demonstrates the incongruity of everyday life.
Sally Spinks is a London based artist. After over 20 years working in media organisations, Sally returned to full-time education to undertake a Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. Previously Sally had been the Head of Learning Design at the BBC and it was whilst at the BBC she completed a Masters in Management Learning in 2000. She now works at IDEO, a global design consultancy, whilst continuing to develop her art practice. She also designs knitted textiles and has knitted garments for use in major feature films (i.e. War Horse - Spielberg film due for release Dec 2011).
