Signs and the City

London Transport Museum

Illustrated talk looking at the wonderful design heritage and future of transport signage

How do you know where you’re going? How do you know when you’ve arrived? Signs are an often overlooked design feature, but play a vital role in our lives. Discover the secrets of signs in this three part presentation looking at the past, present and future of this ubiquitous object. Claire Dobbin, London Transport Museum’s Senior Curator, illustrate the history of Transport for London’s (TfL) iconic signage. Jerry Hill from TfL’s Signs Unit will give a preview of what’s in store for signage in 2012, when TfL will be directing millions of extra visitors around the city, and Alice Maloney will discuss the future of signage, in relation to her work which features in the Museum’s latest temporary exhibition ‘Sense and the City: smart, connected and on the move’.

For a chance to win your own enamel sign, printed to your own order, enter TfL’s competition at www.tfl.gov.uk/shop . Examples of the new signs are on display at various London Design Festival venues including Tent, designjunction and the V&A.
