The Adventures of 13 Hardwood Chairs
The brief is simple. Design a functional seat in the American hardwood of your choice. Product design students from the Royal College of Art, working under tutors Sebastian Wrong and Harry Richardson, have been given the challenge by long time Festival collaborators the American Hardwood Export Council (Timber Wave, AL_A, 2011, Scelera, David Adjaye 2008).
The resulting designs are being prototyped by Sir Terence Conran’s English furniture manufacturing firm Benchmark. It’s all about creating a great, sustainable and lasting piece of furniture. As tutor Harry Richardson says: “It is not only a case of designing a chair that will survive physically far in to the future, it is also to produce a chair whose design will remain relevant far in to the future.”
Over nine days in September, the London Design Festival featured hundreds of events which took place across London, showcasing the city's pivotal role in global design. Save the date: London Design Festival 2013 will take place on the 14th - 22nd September 2013.
A centerpiece of the Festival is our commissions, the Landmark Projects, created with the help of our generous supporters. For the Landmark Projects we commission some of the world's greatest architects and designers to create pieces of work in some of London's best-loved public spaces.
