Paul Boudens, one of the world’s finest graphic designers takes a leap in the dark and installs his work at The Wapping Project in a major installation commissioned by The Wapping Project to celebrate the London Design Festival. Currently working on his own new book as well as a book for milliner Stephen Jones and another for Yohjii Yamamoto, Boudens hideaway in Antwerp has not left him undiscovered. His beautiful A Magazine is considered a masterpiece of contemporary European graphic design while his work for a number of Antwerp’s celebrated fashion designers
has placed him squarely in an international forum..
Boudens will work with the designer Bob Verhelst whose recent triumph at Somerset House together with Paul Boudens who designed the graphics for the Maison Martin Margiela exhibition has brought another Antwerp star into the limelight. And so far Boudens will only say:
“Saw Bob finally on Saturday, we hit it off immediately.
We’re planning to make this kind of 'floating room' in the middle of your big space.
The entrance will be via your small platform (with the stairs to the left) but we'll have stairs leading into the room from the middle of the platform.
The room itself will look as if it is made of scrap material, painted black, so the first view will be quite uncanny. Bob wants to play with light that comes out of slits in the thing.
The inside will be wallpapered with prints of my work (1990-2010): walls, floor, and ceiling (to be confirmed).
Technical details: see bob!
in the far backroom we'd like to put a few pallets with the new book (wrapped so people don't nick one), and also a heap of destroyed volumes I. I’ve got about 400 copies that are damaged so we're going to go crazy with those.
Also, I’d like to have a bonfire outside, burning volume I. yes, I want my own kristallnacht! I remember you often have a fire outside in this kind of vessel, no? We could you use those.
Title wise I’m thinking about 'out on a limb' or ' the 7 year itch'. What do you think? Must dash.”
