10:30 – 11.30
While certain materials have an enduring relationship to the idea of luxury due to their perennially high cost, changing ecological, technological, economic and social conditions all have an impact on the public perception of value. Could materials that we take for granted as universally accessible today become key markers of exclusive access and class distinction in the near future? Will science play a key role in developing the luxury materials of tomorrow? Will growing concerns about sustainability and resources drive invention or generate new interest in old technologies and techniques? Speakers will include Max Lamb and Brent Dzekciorius, Jane Withers and Daisy Ginsberg.

This panel invites specialists from different areas of design education to discuss future modes of teaching, focussing on experimental methods and the role of collaborations and mentoring in the transfer of skills across practitioners as well as generations. It will touch on the impact of changes in education policy and industry on relevant skill sets and address the balance between practical skills, technical knowledge and critical thinking in sustaining and advancing disciplines. Featuring among others Daniel Charny (Director at From Now On and Professor of Design at Kingston University), Dai Rees (Director of Design and Technology at London College of Fashion) and Alexis Georgacopoulos (Director of ECAL, University of Art and Design Lausanne).

The London skyline is often described as ‘playground for the world’s ultra-high-net-worth-individuals’. Is this the future of urban architecture? Where will the remaining population live? What does that mean for neighbourhoods, public spaces and rural areas? And how does the virtual space challenge the material fabric of those environments? The panel will include Liam Young and Kate Davies of Unknown Fields Division.
