ENLIGHTENED WASTE

MARION FRIEDMANN GALLERY

Enlightened Waste is an enchanting light installation from up-cycled PET and Polystyrene packaging material

French-Mexican designer Thierry Jeannot (Mexico City) and Austrian artist Gisela Stiegler (Vienna) use waste packaging material to create enchanting light objects. A chandelier out of 1500 PET bottles, constructed with the help of one of the most disadvantaged residents of Mexico City. A series of lamp sculptures carved out of polystyrene boxes obtained from fishmongers of Viennese markets. The pieces surprise and disturb preconceptions about the value of materials. They mimic a luxury object, just to transfigure into one themselves. The chandelier looks like a crystal chandelier, reminiscent of the glass-blown pieces from Murano. The polystyrene lights appear like ivory and alabaster. This represents pure and genuine up-cycling.
