‘DIGNITY OF LABOUR’
For the London Design Festival this year, Gallery FUMI presents a show of Paul Kelley’s new work. Continuing his breakdown of the form, whilst still maintaining the functionality, craftsmanship and usage of high quality materials, this show sees Paul Kelley drawing on influences from the Bauhaus, Paolo Buffa and Jacques Quinet, using materials ranging from copper and brass plate to plaster and LG Hi-Macs. The Dignity Of Labour is a 12" vinyl record released in 1979. This show like the record celebrates the collaboration between people and workers. “For those that work with their hands there always has been and always should be dignity in labour” Paul Kelley
‘FUTURE REFLECTIONS’ – STUDENT COMPETITION BETWEEN RCA AND ECAL
FUMI placed a competition with two renowned design schools, the ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART in London, UK and the ECAL/HAUTE ÉCOLE D’ART ET DE DESIGN in Lausanne, Switzerland, for their students to produce an original design for a mirror defined in the brief as ‘an object which enables reflection’, a very broad definition to leave to students fantasy and creativity the choice of materials to use. Seven winning entries will have their prototypes commissioned by Gallery FUMI which will be exhibited in the downstairs space of the gallery during London Design Festival and Frieze Art Fair.
The judging panel included Humberto and Fernando Campana - designers, Giles Deacon – fashion designer, Marcus Fairs – editor of Deezeen, Michelle Ogundehin – editor in chief of Elle Decoration magazine and Caroline Roux – writer and consultant.
‘NEW LIGHT WORKS’
New work by Pieke Bergmans, Marcus Tremonto, Freddie Yauner and Pierric Verger, will be presented alongside the two main exhibitions during the festival.
ABOUT FUMI
FUMI is based in the vibrant Shoreditch area of London, the city’s most trend setting quarter where many artists and designers have their studios. Since the beginning of 2008, FUMI has become a significant presence on the design scene for the remarkable works of the designers it shows, and for the bold attitude of its owners. Unsurprisingly, the gallery has had plenty of attention in both the national and international press. Galley FUMI’s main aim is to provide a platform for selected emerging designers and artists with exceptional talent to present new work.
