A powerful exploration into the art of translation between International PEN, 26 and Pentagram.

Over the Easter weekend 2009, International PEN held the FREE THE WORD festival on London’s South Bank. 26 set up the festival blog carrying reviews of events, and hosted 26 EXCHANGES - an exploration into translation. Writers from around the world were invited to email texts to members of 26, and daily progress reports on the translations were posted on the blog. This exhibition designed by Harry Pearce of Pentagram is a graphic interpretation of the stories that emerged - from writer’s struggling to understand foreign languages and cultures, to life in countries where freedom of expression is not a human right.
