Less than ten days to go; across London there's a real sense of activity as people put the final touches to their exhibitions.
Tickets are on sale and some exhibitions are already up and running. Below are some of the events we'd recommend you keen an eye on.
While much of the preparation for this year's Festival goes on behind closed doors, Amanda Levete's Timber Wave, a Festival Landmark Project, was being built this week in full public view. It's a remarkable construction created from American red oak. As Levete told last weekend's Observer, "Here we have an opportunity to really explore and experiment." More
Can design make us happier? What is design's role in a new DIY hacker economy? How far can a designer go to make people behave differently? What is the future for digital design? The Google Design Lectures are an exciting new way of presenting design thinking as a dynamic dialogue with the audience. Featuring J. Free registration is now open for this year's Designersblock London - one of this year's stand-out Design Destinations featuring over 100 British and international designers. This year Designersblock also present Confluence, a one day conferene exploring key issues facing Europe's creative economies on September 13 – plus a design exhibition at Europe House curated by Designersblock. Hosted by Tom Dixon, the waterside complex The Dock continues to develop as a favourite Design Destination for Festival-goers. Alongside the Tom Dixon Shop's own launches, Multiplex features guests like Fine Cell Work, Print Club London featuring Anthony Burrill, James Joyce and Pure Evil, a second restaurant, a trail of Aston Martin's lastest designs, Marcel Wanders' Moooi Mermaids at Moooi's White Building – even a flatpack boat. Buzzier than ever, Oxo Tower Wharf swings into action this week with the African and African-Caribbean Design Diaspora multi-disciplinary exhibition ?Choices!, Wagumi's Creative Connections, plus 26 designers studios and a programme of events, including Miranda Watkins Design's Spin and Little + Collins Textile Floorstyle. In Tandem is a platform highlighting the work of recent graduates from the Royal College of Art Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery department. They have created an installation of remade and reinterpreted domestic objects. More
Shortlisted artists and designers for the bi-annual international prize for work inspired by Islamic traditions of art, craft and design span a geographical region stretching from North America, to France, Algeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq and Iran. More
Shane Walter of onedotzero arrives at ditto tv's monthly Campfire evening to discuss the state of digital culture; plus an exhibition of work by digital creative studio SDNA. More
