Congratulations to David Kohn Architects, who, with artist Fiona Banner, have just won the Living Architecture A Room For London contest organised with Artangel.
This one-bedroom temporary installation designed by David Kohn and Fiona Banner is a delightful imaginary boat that makes no concessions to the iconic brutalism of the building it sits on. Kohn's recent work has been very much about creating celebratory spaces. When I visited the Rainbow House two years ago, it was half-way through being rebuilt. I was there to interview the artist Richard Woods who was creating the house's floors using his trademark "logos". "The woman who owns it is a former Miss Russia," Woods had explained, before trying in vain to demonstrate the revolving bed upstairs. He had been commissioned by his friend, the architect Ab Rogers who was working on the house in Portobello Road.
It was completed last year. It's nice to have a peek at the finished version. Should you have £15,000 you could rent it out for a month. ... More

'Architecture is a funny word,' says Thomas Heatherwick, 'It is not set apart from other design.'
