A question. If the UK is home to the best designers in the world, why doesn't it also have the best writers about design?
Or maybe it does. Print journalism has already given us the great Alice Rawsthornes, Deyan Sudjics and others of the world but can the digital generation produce an entirely new era of British design criticism?
For the nine days of the London Design Festival, we want to see if we can find a way to shine a light on the talent that's already out there, raise the bar for those who are already established, and at the same time draw in a whole new pool of enthusiasts and experts, commentators and critics.
That's the thinking behind the mydeco Design Democracy Blog Awards 2010, created by mydeco.com. The voting is on to pick four of the best design bloggers in the UK, with categories for independents, professionals and newcomers, as well as an overall award for best interior design blog in the UK, to be selected by a panel that includes Sir Terence Conran, Phillipe Starck, Kelly Hoppen, Marc Newson, Tara Bernerd and Kirstie Allsopp.
The four winners become official bloggers for the London Design Festival, providing criticism, reportage and news on events, debates and exhbitions. Please head over there right now and add your votes.
You'll be able to meet those winners and other members of the London Design Festival blogging team at the Digital Hub at the V&A which is going to be the control centre for our online activities during the Festival. From there, we'll be encouraging as many people as we can to write, podcast, and make short movies about what they've seen there and in other London Design Festival venues — and we'll see how much talent we can unearth in nine days.
